1954 BUICK TOOLS – JACK CHANGE
1954 – 40 & 60 SERIES

Some Auto Specialties Jacks were sent out with incorrect heads in 40-60 Series cars. These jacks were to be used only with 50-70 Series jobs. As a precautionary measure, we suggest that all 40-60 Series cars be checked, and if they have the incorrect jack heads as illustrated in Fig. 124, the jack should be replaced.

Use of the first type Auto Specialties Jack Head on the 40-60 Series bumper will result in the bending of the bumper face plate.

REAR AXLE JACK CORRECTION

It has been brought to our attention that the rear axle jack J 3222 has a tendency to slip from the differential carrier. This condition can be corrected by:

  1. Weld a piece of steel to the ears of the jack ram as shown in Figure 125.

  • Attach the jack to the carrier by placing the lower banjo to carrier bolt through the hole in the new welded piece.
  • The 1/2″ hole may be elongated to overcome interference and the spring and chain assembly need no longer be used.

CHANGE IN HYDRAULIC VALVE LIFTERS  TEST FLUID

The mixture of kerosene and Dynaflow oil is no longer approved as a satisfactory test fluid for the Kent’-Moore hydraulic valve lifter test fixture. This fact has been proven by the erratic action of the fixture when checking the V-8 lifter. A very thorough investigation has proven that the viscosity of the kerosene mixture varies to such a degree that a true reading is not obtained on the V-8 lifter. The sensitiveness of the V-8 lifter to the viscosity of the test fluid is caused by the very close fit between the lifter plunger and body.

It would not be practical to use different fluids for each type lifter; therefore, it has been decided to standardize on a new fluid that works satisfactorily on both lifters. The new fluid is called “Hydraulic Valve Lifter Test Fluid.” This fluid cannot be purchased locally and therefore will be stocked and sold by Kent-Moore Organization, Inc., General Motors Building, Detroit 2, Michigan. It may be ordered under Kent-Moore number J-5268. The fluid will be sold in gallon cans and is priced at $1.75 per gallon.

The 5 gallon can is priced at $5.95 and may be ordered under number J -5268-A.

During the recent investigation it was found that while cleanliness has always been important, it is even more important when working with the V-8 lifter. It is absolutely necessary that the test fluid be free of all foreign material such as lint, grit, etc. Covers were furnished with each fixture and the fixture should always be covered when not in use so that foreign material will not collect on the fixture and fall into the cup. This is of the utmost importance. It is recommended that the fixture be used in an area that is as clean as possible and not in areas where valve or bench grinders are located.

The hydraulic valve lifter is made up of closely machined and selectively fitted parts. The Kent Moore test fixture is a free moving precision type test fixture and must be treated as such in order to obtain accurate true readings.

The use of the new test fluid, J -5268, does not change previously published test procedures and the limits for leakdown remain at 12 to 40 seconds for the V -8 lifters and 9 to 38 seconds for the straight 8 lifters.

For additional Hydraulic valve lifter test information refer to page 177, of the 1953 Buick Product Service Bulletins Abridged Edition, and pages 41 and 42, Group 2-27, paragraph g of the 1953 Buick Shop Manual.

V-8 ENGINE DISTRIBUTOR HOLDDOWN BOLT WRENCH
