5-7 1959 BUICK REAR SEAT ASSEMBLY
1959 Buick Rear Seat Back Assembly – Removal and Installation – All Styles Except Convertible
- Remove 1959 Buick rear seat cushion assembly.
- On styles with rear seat center arm rest, lower arm rest; disengage upper end of arm rest trim panel from seat back assembly and lower trim panel ; remove two bolts securing arm rest hanger plate to seat back support reinforcement.
- At bottom of the seat back, bend the four body tabs that secure the seat back to the floor panel and to the wheelhouse panel. On 37 styles, the lower end of the seat back is retained by two body tabs at the floor panel only.
- Pull seat back assembly out at bottom until seat back clears body tabs; then raise seat back upward until seat back disengages from hangers on the seat back panel support.
- Remove seat back assembly from body.
- To install, reverse removal procedure, making certain that all attaching body tabs and hangers have industrial waterproof body tape applied to them to act as an anti-squeak.
1959 Buick Rear Seat Back Assembly – Removal and Installation – All Convertibles
- Remove 1959 Buick rear seat cushion assembly.
- Disconnect rear seat back speaker wire, if present.
- Working over rear of rear seat back, remove screw securing rear end of folding top compartment side trim panel to rear of rear seat back frame.
- At bottom of the seat back, remove two screws and washers which secure the seat back frame to the seat back support.
- Raise seat back until seat back disengages from hangers on seat back panel and remove seat back assembly from body.
- To install, reverse removal procedure.
1959 Buick Rear Seat Back to Quarter Panel Filler Panel – Removal and Installation – 37 and 39 Styles
- Remove 1959 Buick rear seat back assembly. (See “Rear Seat Back Assembly – Removal and Installation” procedure.)
- On “37” Styles, remove three screws securing filler panel to rear quarter panel as shown at “A” in Figure 5-12.

- On “39” Styles, loosen cemented trim flap portion of filler panel from floor pan, wheelhouse and shelf panel. Remove four screws securing filler panel to rear quarter panel as shown at “A” in Figure 5-13.

- Remove filler panel from body.
- To install, reverse removal procedure.
NOTE: When installing filler panel, always align upper end of filler panel to shelf panel first. In some cases, it may be necessary to drill new holes when installing filler panel.
5-8 CENTER ARM REST ASSEMBLY AND RADIO SPEAKER AND GRILLE SUPPORT
1959 Buick Rear Seat Center Arm Rest Assembly – Removal and Installation – 4700 and 4800 Styles
- Remove 1959 Buick rear seat back assembly and place upside down on a clean protected surface.
- Remove four bolts securing rear seat arm rest support plate to rear seat back spring assembly.
- Lift up lower edge of seat back assembly and disengage arm rest with attached arm rest trim panel from seat back spring assembly and remove arm rest from assembly.
- To install, reverse removal procedure.
- Adjust support plate as required, so that arm rest, when in raised position, is centered in and flush to the seat back cushion.
Rear Seat Back Center Arm Rest Cushion Assembly Only – Removal and Installation
- With seat back assembly installed in body, operate arm rest to lowered position.
- Slide upper end of arm rest trim panel down until it disengages from seat back spring assembly and rotate trim panel forward.
- Remove four bolts securing rear end of arm rest cushion assembly to crossbar portion of arm rest linkage and support assembly and remove arm rest cushion with attached trim panel from assembly.
- To install, reverse removal procedure.
Rear Seat Back Radio Speaker and Grill Support – Removal and Installation – 4867 Styles
- Remove 1959 Buick rear seat back assembly from body and place upside down on a clean protected surface. (See “Rear Seat Back Assembly-Removal and Installation” procedure.)
- Detach trim on back of seat back assembly sufficiently to gain access to support-to-seat back frame lower screws.
- Remove two lower and two upper support to-seat back frame screws and remove support with attached speaker and grille assembly from assembly.
- To install, reverse removal procedure.
Rear Seat Back Radio Speaker – Removal and Installation
- Remove 1959 Buick rear seat back assembly from body and place upside down on a clean protected surface. (See “Rear Seat Back Assembly – Removal and Installation” procedure.)
- Detach trim on back of seat assembly to gain access to speaker attaching screws.
- Remove four screws securing speaker to speaker and grille support and remove speaker from assembly.
- To install, reverse removal procedure.
1959 Buick Rear Seat Back Radio Speaker Grille Assembly – Removal and Installation
- Remove radio speaker. (See “Rear Seat Back Radio Speaker Removal and Installation” procedure.)
- Remove four nuts or screws securing grille assembly to rear seat back radio speaker and grille support and remove grille assembly.
- To install, reverse removal procedure.
