2-21 REAR DOOR ASSEMBLY AND HINGES

Description

The 1959 Buick rear door assembly is attached to the body center pillar with two (2) butt type hinges. The upper hinge on all styles is secured with three (3) screws to an anchor plate at the door hinge pillar and three (3) bolts to an upper hinge support at the center pillar. The lower hinge on all styles incorporates an integral type door check and hold open and is secured with three (3) screws to an anchor plate at both the door hinge pillar and center pillar.

1959 Buick Rear Door Assembly – Removal

Either of the following two (2) methods can be used to remove the door from the body.

  1. The door and hinges can be removed as an assembly from the center pillar.
  2. The door can be removed from the hinge straps.
  3. On “29” and “39” styles, operate window to down position.
  4. Clean off excess sealer from around each hinge strap and mark hinge location on door hinge pillar or center pillar depending on method of removal being used.
  5. On bodies equipped with electrically-powered window regulators, proceed as follows:
    • Remove door trim assembly and detach inner panel water deflector.
    • Remove screws securing electrical conduit to center pillar. Bend out conduit tab and remove conduit from wiring harness.
    • Detach wiring harness from door inner panel, as required, and disconnect harness from regulator motor at connector. Remove wiring harness from between door panels through opening in door hinge pillar.
  6. With door properly supported, remove three (3) upper and lower hinge attaching screws at door hinge pillar or screws and bolts at center pillar (fig. 2-39) depending on method of removal being used.
1959 Buick Rear Door Hinges

  • With aid of helper, remove door from body opening.
  • 1959 Buick Rear Door Assembly Installation

    1. With scraper and mineral spirits, clean off old sealing compound at hinge areas. This operation should be performed carefully to avoid possibility of soiling adjacent trim material.
    2. Apply a coat of heavy-bodied sealer to attaching surfaces of hinge straps or corresponding surfaces of door and body (fig. 2-40).
1959 Buick Rear Door Hinge Anti-squeak Sealing

1959 Buick Rear Door Hinge Anti-squeak Sealing

  • With helper, lift door into position. Install screws loosely, then align straps within marks on pillar and tighten bolts. Check door for alignment.
  • On doors with electrically-operated windows, proceed as follows:
    • Install wiring harness inside of door. Connect regulator motor, then install wiring harness to inner panel.
    • Install conduit to hinge pillar and secure wiring harness in conduit with retaining tabs. Check operation of electric window assembly.
    • Reseal water deflector to inner panel as specified under “Door Inner Panel Water Deflector-Detachment and Installation.”
    • Install door trim assembly and previously removed door hardware.
  • 1959 Buick Rear Door Assembly Adjustments

The 1959 Buick rear door hinge adjustments are similar to those performed on past models. In and out or up and down adjustments are provided at door hinge pillar. Fore and aft adjustments are provided at center pillar.

When checking the door for alignment, remove the door lock striker from the body pillar to allow door to hang free on its hinges.

NOTE: After performing any adjustments the 1959 Buick rear door window on “29” and “39” styles should be checked for proper alignment with the side roof mil weatherstrip. In addition, the door lock extension-to-striker engagement should be checked and adjusted if necessary.

    1. For in and out or up and down adjustment, loosen hinge to door pillar attaching screws (fig. 2-39), adjust door as required and tighten screws.
NOTE: When performing in and out adjustments, adjust one (1) hinge at a time so that the “up and down” adjustment is maintained.
    2. To adjust door fore or aft, loosen hinge to center pillar attaching screws and bolts (fig. 2-39), adjust door fore or aft as required and tighten screws and bolts.

NOTE: Each lower sash channel roller assembly is composed o'{ an inner roller, spring washer and outer roller. When engaging lower sash channel rollers into front and rear guide cams, IT IS IMPORTANT that entire roller assembly is installed inside front and rear guide cams. Failure to do so will result in an improperly and / or hard operating 1959 Buick rear door window assembly and could also cause the window assembly to rattle.

    6. To install; reverse removal procedure. Prior to installation of window lower sash channel cam, lubricate cam with lubriplate or its equivalent along entire length of cam. Also lubricate lower sash channel roller assemblies.
NOTE: Each lower sash channel roller assem is composed of an inner roller, spring washer and outer roller.

IMPORTANT: The front or rear of window assembly may be adjusted up or down by adjusting either front or rear male wedge plate up or down as required. In cases of a major adjustment, however, both wedge plates should be adjusted to obtain proper “up” travel of window assembly.

NOTE: In extreme cases, a limited amount of adjustment’ may be obtained by adjusting front and rear guide cams up or down as required; however, this adjustment is very limited and is not intended to correct a major up or down misalignment of the window assembly.

Fore or aft adjustment of door window assembly:

Through access hole shown in Figures 2-47 and 2-48, loosen front guide cam upper attaching screw.

NOTE: The position of the regulator clamped in the vise will vary with type of regulator and position of lift arm.
CAUTION: BE SURE TO PERFORM STEPS 2 AND 3 BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE MOTOR FROM REGULATOR. The regulator lift arm, which is under tension from the counter-balance spring can cause serious injury if the motor is removed without locking the sector in position.

  • Drill a 1/4″ hole through sector and back plate within area indicated by dotted lines in illustration (fig. 2-57).
NOTE: Location of hole in backplate will also vary depending on position of sector. DO NOT locate hole less than 1/2″ away from edge of back plate or sector.
  • Insert a 3/16″ bolt through hole in back plate and sector and install nut to bolt. (Do not tighten nut.)
  • Remove motor attaching bolts and remove motor assembly from regulator (fig. 2-57).
NOTE: Clean off steel chips from regulator sector and motor pinion gear after drilling operation.
  • To install, reverse removal procedure. If difficulty is encountered when trying to line up motor assembly attaching hole, the regulator lift arm may be moved up or down manually, so that motor pinion gear will mesh with teeth on regulator sector, and regulator attaching holes will line up.
  • NOTE: Be sure to remove temporary nut and bolt from regulator before installing it into door or rear quarter.
